What is happening to Ian Ross' Face?

I heard you have to be ruthless to survive in the media, but who said anything about absorbing the essence of graduates interns to preserve your youth? Apparently, Ian Ross did. Is it plastic surgery? Or is it Proactive SKINCARE Solution - the revolutionary skin care solution promoted by Jessica Simpson? Or is it something else. Let's have a history lesson and examine.

This is Ian Ross... in 90s - you can almost make out the features of the Channel 7 newsreader.

Ian Ross in 2001: Things are looking a little foundationy up in here... the eyes have been sold to foreign vendors, but the rest remains.

Ian Ross in 2005 - any harder and numerous chasms will creak their arrival yawn. Don't get me started on his eyebrows - they look unhappy compared to the above picture :(

Ian Ross in 2011. The transformation is complete.
In my thorough research I made an astounding discovery, Wikipedia told me that Ian Ross was born in 1940!!! He's almost SEVENTY! I for one am happy that men feel the pressure to look young, while Anne Sanders gets pushed into the mud and stomped on by Chris Bath whenever she has a birthday.

What do you think of Ian Ross' face? Ghoul or GORGEOUS? Add a comment...

AuNTM Recap - Final 6

The Daily Telegraph knocked down my door. The tied me down and played Millsy's album until I agreed to blog on Australia's Next Top Model for them.
So here's a recap of last night's episode. Click HERE

I think we can all agree that Rebecca's loss will be inevitably felt. Interpret that how you want :D

Overheard at Sydney Uni

While the above African-American and Soccer Mom have nothing to do with the demographic of USyd, eavesdropping is fun and your only option for the bus when your i-Pod headphones break again. So here are a few quotes heard around campus from the past few weeks.

In the library

Girl to man at info desk: "Is there somewhere in here where I can sleep?"

(though it's what we're ALL thinking)

Carslaw

Guy at gymnastics society booth: "HEY HANDSOME BOY! COME BUY SOME FOOD!"

(marketing major?)

Arts students walking on Eastern Avenue:

Guy 1: "You want to Chai?"
Guy 2: "Nah, I need something stronger, like a Latte"

(slow down there cowboy, one day it's latte, the next it's flat-whites!!)

Walking out of lecture

Guy: These are my girlfriend's skinny-jeans I'm wearing
Girl: They look good on you :

(after he said that, gravity bent in on itself and a nebulus entity swallowed the room)

On the 440

Guy: I really need to get one of those bus passes. Why do they call it a Travel 10?
Girl: Because you get 10 trips >_>
Guy: Oh.. yeah i'd get one but I'd have to walk all the way to Seaforth shops
Girl: Doesn't that take 10 minutes? <_<
Guy: But it's on a hill.

(i'm sure your parents will carry you, son)

This next one was in Wynyard. There was an elderly woman (1) having trouble walking down the stairs while another elderly woman (2) was patiently behind her.

Elderly woman 1: Sorry about this
Elderly woman 2: That's ok, I'm disabled too
Elderly woman 1: It's terrible isn't it
Elderly woman 2: Isn't it

Awww... they talk about it like it's something that happens every day like waiting for the bus, or telling Millie Edwards to get out of your trash.

Secret Computer Rooms at USyd

Sick of crowds at McGrath and time limits at Fisher. Not to mention those evil "mirage" computers which are always free but then it turns out it's just intranet. Here are some secret troves, where once you step upon them twinkling Zelda music will play and you'll do a backflip before doing a "peace sign" towards the camera.

Get High in Fisher

Your first quest is a mountain voyage. You'll go up high into the stacks to level 7. If you start seeing lime green flashing before you, it's not vertigo, it will be your first clue:

Turn right, go along the corridor, turn right again and you'll see some computers.

Now i've never actually used these computers, but the climb itself will be worth the dramatic view of UTS (the cause of this bad weather).

Education Basement

No, it's not the entire UWS, it's in the Education building. Go inside, you'll see a stairway leading down DOWN DOWN opposite you. The dungeon is full of beautiful education students who are trained to be friendly young teachers who somewhere along the line mutate into bitter, crusty librarians. Turn left and into the blue (literally) and there it sits, often with free spaces.

Language Labs

This one is very hard to find. NOT because it's particularly tricky to get to, just because it's opposite Manning Bar. Bring a battering ram and fire to get rid of beggars/student electionteers plus maybe a peg so the scent of beer doesn't waft you in the errant direction.

Then go inside through the lazy doors that open for you and turn right.

Follow the hallway, past the notice boards, consider taking up a Chinese/English language exchange on the noticeboards then you'll see it.
It often has spaces free, either in this room or Lab 1 opposite it. However from 12am to 2pm, it can get crowded. It also comes free with some random French woman who randomly comes in and shouts at you if you leave your bags unattended.

HINT: The computers are a bit close together, so avoid one where everyone will be pushing past you every few seconds.

What other hidden computer rooms do you frequent? Add a comment...

Big Brother 2008

Yes, Sydney Spy Big Brother coverage is here. I was in France this time last year so I completely missed out on BB'07 (/mixed reaction of yays and boos heard from inside my head). Tonight they unveiled the new housemates, so let's discuss briefly what we think of them. Plus this is the only place you can discuss BB since in real life it's much too shameful. I've added some info about each hamster.

Travis (high-voiced sexually-ambiguous guy)
Good-natured and friendly. His voice will grate after a few minutes and I'm dying to see if that's what he sounds like in the morning.

If I were a fruit I'd be... a furry peach.

Rory (brickie with dreams beyond his buttery grasp)

Bit of a tosser. Looks like he smells bad - seriously, look at this above picture and tell me a phantom-smell of Hugo BosE and ashtray doesn't appear in your nostrils. Though his dog rocks.
My biggest accomplishment to date is... having a YouTube video with 100 000 hits.
Saxon (???)
I got home too late and missed his entrance. His eyebrows when Brigitte walked in spoke volumes though.

My head is misshapen because... I was born inside a beer bottle.

Terri (the old one)

They were hyping her as some giant racist, but she showed the most personality last night. She was so sweet with the midget girl and made jokes about Kyle. That's alright in my book (released August)... at least until she starts talking about "ethnic cleansing" or something. That's not cool.

If I could have any elective surgery it would be... laser eye surgery, it sounds cool because it involves lasers.

Dixie (the girl who ticks the "aboriginal or torres strait islander" box on government forms)

Perfectly acceptable. Lol, just kidding. She seems nice and friendly, I just hope she entertains me too.

I think Neighbours was best when... Susan had long hair and Nicola Charles was around.

Nobbi (I can't think of anything distinctive about him, I'm just that tolerant)

FINALLY, an Asian contestant. We should be representing Australia more like this. I missed his entrance too so I can't say anything.

I'd describe my sense of fashion as... General Pants Co. Mannequin.

Rebecca (the confused bar-maid)

She seemed lost on stage, and I can't remember much about her. She skills include serving beer in lingerie and doing the grapevine. She's a typical BB contestanct season 1-7 and hope she leaves first... and I hope she cries because of it *death stare*

If I were a kind of chocolate, I'd be... beige-filled.

Renee (The Rugby Sheila)I don't hate her. She looks like she'll get angry and start swiping with jagged teeth and crooked nails. One to watch! Will she be the next Reggie or the next Sharna?

My fave Hungarian philosopher is... Lakatos.

Rima (Midget)This is what Big Brother is supposed to be all about. People with medical abberations being forced to live with each other in close quaters. Though she seems a lot more appealing and switched-on than Rory, so what's his excuse? I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone will react with her, their faces and "wow"s when she walked in forecast choppy weather ahead. Plus how will they fit her in to Friday Night Live?

When I grow up I want to be... exactly the same size.

Alice (Human Thermometer)

She's amicable and she'll probably be final 3 for being a good Aussie girl who doesn't step on anybody's toes. I'm glad they put a professional in though.

I can bring dodos back from extinction... but I can't open a picket fence gate.

Ben (The Law Student) I feel mixed about this one. He seemed a bit awkward, but he's very much a "TV-safe nerd" like Seth from the O.C., I want a total nerd, like one of those Koreans who plays World of Warcraft until they die of starvation. He's just average but let's hope for tears before bedtime.

When I want to impress... I wear suspenders and a necklace.

Bianca (The Busty Wench)

I missed her entrance, but I think everyone did due to being distracted by her imbalancements. They're just not sexy, Bianca, I just hope you don't sink in the pool. But i'm being too superficial, she also wears glasses so I guess everything fits together.

In case of a collision... my chest can be used as a safety device.

Brigitte (the one whom all the little girls will vote out as soon as they get the chance)She's pretty and ditzy, and this photo doesn't suggest she'll be solving that severe problem of continental drift anytime soon. Will she break season 3 Jo's eviction record?

My nail-polish may say 'toxic'... but it's just so damn tasty.

David (Cult Member Fireman) His face and expressions are a bit culty but I think that gimmick will tire very quickly. I just hope he has some bizarre habits to keep us tuned in.

I'm gonna sit at the welcome table, I'm gonna sit at the welcome table, I'm gonna sit at the welcome table... one of these days.

Overall, Kyle and Jackie O were surprisingly not irritating and I enjoy that they have to eat one of their own before daybreak of Battle Royale ensues. Oh wait... only half of that is true, but it's still interesting.

But only some of you care what I think, what do you think? Is Terri awful or great? Is Ben anything special? Rami - midget? David worth talking about? What do you think so far? Add a comment...

Sydney Train Scrums

4:00pm - Wynyard Station. The 3:42pm Western Line train rolls in with a clang and an exasperated "finally". Dressed in formal attire, branching notebooks, discussing business mergers on mobiles - the multicultural rainbow of Sydney approaches the doors.

Then FIGHT - the jousting begins. Everyone getting off the train must scrum against everyone getting on. The number players on each side depends randomly on 1) the amount of people inside the carriage and 2) the position of the doors whether it's a 6 car train or an 8 car train. The unfortunate example below, we see 31 vs. 1.
Unfortunately, he loses and he must return to the train, hold a caucus in the carriage and summon up enough morale so his team defeats the next station.
At least, this must be an explanation for why we form human walls in front of train doors. We must assume we become impermeable entities that can be walked though when the Tangara separates its mandibles. I recommend that Cityrail installs bouncers and a velvet rope in front of each door. The rebellious will be tazed.

Do you enjoy Sydney train scrumming? Are you a perpetrator or a victim? Add a comment...

Video of the Week: 25/3

Australian video of the week:

"21 Accents"

This American woman, Amy Walker, does impressions of a bunch of English accents from all over the world. I am impressed with her Sydney accent at 1:12! Though her "outback" accent at 1:25 is a bit cringe-worthy.

It's a good thing she didn't attempt a Tasmanian accent or she would have had to lose a finger and violate YouTube regulations.

Multicultural video of the week:

"The Romanian National Anthem - Deşteaptă-te, Române! "

Maybe the coolest and angriest national anthem in the world. Adopted very late in 1991, the 80s synths are well present, making the song easily mistakable for a Eurovision entry. The Romanian people is this video vary from seethingly bitter to uber excited to bored witless... all in the same row.

Highlights:

- Look closely at the beginning for the UNHAPPIEST woman ever to be in a red plastic cowboy hat.

- 0:49 - the woman could suck her nose clean.

- 2:59 - the man in the striped suit wins.

How does the Romanian anthem compare to ours? What do you think of Amy Walker?

Sydney This Week In Pictures

Eastern-er Avenue

First of all, words play hide and seek with me when I try to express how happy I am with the new uber massive Eastern Avenue in Sydney University. When you see all the people there between classes, it's hard to believe they all frottaged together on that small path a third of the size.

I'm glad they're making over the university... but can't they instead make it worse so we don't have to feel sad about graduating?

Ticket Inspectors & Train Police

They're everywhere right now! It's not like they hide their identity like the ones from other countries do. So on this train, I heard the pharaonic clomping of someone descendng the stairs. She notice the guards on the other side (below), she paused and ran off the train.

I'm sure it was just an ex-boyfriend or life-coach or something.

Outside Hairdresser

Spotted in Bondi. Why not? It's like a solarium/hairdresser. Her overheads must be expensive, if she has to rent the entire outside world.

She also does Brazilan waxing - spectator fees vary depending on weather conditions. I just hope a bird does fly in and cause genital Lyme disease.
Fan of the new Eastern Avenue? Escaped some inspectors? Considering an investment in outdoor hair removal? Add a comment...

Sydney Spy Scooped

Hi readers and tumbleweed, I was in beautiful Budapest for the last 3 months working at a magazine there. But now I'm back and more in love with my city than ever!

Exciting news: I got a book published! It's a children's book called Cindy Ella that will be released in August 2008. Here's proof: click here. You'll see they kindly did not write in my death date, nor did they make predictions. I appreciate that. I plan to be active again here because I missed Sydney Spy! Any comment or hit I got when I was starting this blog really encouraged me to keep writing so I thank you all!
